The Calgary Flames announced on Monday the signing of acquired forward Matt Stajan to a multi-year contract.

Stajan, 26, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The Flames acquired the Mississauga, Ont., native last month in a multi-player deal that saw defenceman Dion Phaneuf head to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Stajan has two goals and two assists in seven games with Calgary, giving him 45 points on the season in 62 NHL games.

The centre has scored 89 goals and added 138 assists in 452 NHL games.

The Flames did not announce specifics of the deal. TSN reported it is a four-year deal that averages $3.5 million US per season.

The signings of Stajan and Rene Bourque last week put the Flames closer to the cap for next season, with management needing to make some hard decisions for the summer.

Ian White, Eric Nystrom and Dustin Boyd are restricted free agents, with Chris Higgins, Jamal Mayers and Craig Conroy unrestricted free agents.
