Jordan Staal's ailing foot will keep him out of the start of training camp, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Thursday.
Staal, 21, is expected to recover in time to begin the regular season.
The Thunder Bay, Ont., native suffered a lacerated tendon in his right foot during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinal against Montreal at the end of April. He returned to the lineup for Game 4 and played the rest of the series, which the Canadiens won in seven games.
"The fact that Jordan came back and played with this injury during the playoffs is a testament to his toughness and competitiveness," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said in a release.
"He has experienced some setbacks due to infection, but is now on the road to recovery. We believe he'll be ready for the start of the regular season in October."
Staal had 21 goals and 28 assists while playing all 82 regular- season games in 2009-10, and added three goals and two assists in the playoffs.
Pittsburgh opens its 2010-11 training camp on Sept. 18.
The Penguins host Philadelphia on Oct. 7 to start the regular season.
