Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux was among 53 people appointed to the Order of Canada Friday in Ottawa.

The ceremony, which took place at Rideau Hall and presided over by Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean, saw Lemieux invested as an officer — the second-highest grade.

Created in 1967 during the country's centennial year, the Order of Canada recognizes Canadians for a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

In 2009, Lemieux became a member of the National Order of Quebec with the rank of Knight.

Lemieux is the only person to capture the Stanley Cup both as a player and an owner.

Born in Montreal, he led the Penguins to a pair of Stanley Cup championships in the early 1990s before being named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997.

He then watched as his Penguins captured the NHL title in 2009.

Lemieux was already a legend in Quebec when the Penguins made him the No. 1 overall pick in 1984.

Following in the footsteps of icon Guy Lafleur, Lemieux broke his idol's scoring record in his last year of junior hockey, piling up 133 goals while also posting an amazing 282 points for the then-Laval Voisins of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
