It's time to talk personal achievements with Ryan Dempster, whose Chicago Cubs haven't been part of the playoff conversation this season.
The native of Sechelt, B.C., will try for the third time to become the fourth Canadian pitcher to win 100 games in the major leagues when the Cubs visit Milwaukee Saturday night.
The legendary Ferguson Jenkins tops all Canadian hurlers with 284 victories, followed by Kirk McCaskill (106) and Reggie Cleveland (105).
In his latest attempt at 100 wins, the 33-year-old Dempster was chased in the fifth inning of an 18-5 drubbing at the hands of the New York Mets.
There were questions of whether the innings had caught up to the six-foot-two-inch right-hander this season after he gave up three earned runs on nine hits and walked four in 4 2/3 innings.
'My arm feels good'
Dempster scoffed at those suggestions, saying it was a lack of execution for a second consecutive start.
"I feel good, my velocity is good, my arm feels good," he told Chicago reporters. "I'm not putting guys away when I'm ahead of them and that's a rare occasion."
Dempster has reached 200 innings five times in 12 major league seasons and stands at 186 2/3 through 29 starts in 2010.
Dempster has allowed 14 runs over 7 2/3 innings in his last two outings, but sports a 3-0 record and 2.84 earned-run average in four starts this season versus Milwaukee. He is 14-3 with a 2.71 ERA in 21 career starts against the Brewers.
The Cubs enter play Wednesday with a 60-79 mark, 19½ games behind Canadian Joey Votto and the National League Central-leading Cincinnati Reds.
