The 24 players began their endurance bid on Friday night in a club in Greenwich, south-east London, and went on for 43 hours and 30 minutes.

Each entrant put £20 in the pot, with the winner taking half of the money and the rest going to charity.

Player Sarah Lawrence: "We were pretty tired towards the end but we all perked up as we counted down to the record."

The first hand was dealt at 2100 GMT at the Basement Jacks club and the game went on until Sunday afternoon.

Ms Lawrence, who runs an online poker website, said two independent moderators monitored the bid.

The results will be sent to Guinness World Records for verification before the record is made official.

"We all claim to play poker 24 hours a day," said Ms Lawrence. "This was a chance to put our money where our mouth is."

The winner's takings and proceeds for charity have yet to be determined.
