Make your first poker foray enjoyable

I am often approached by people who say, "I play Texas Hold 'Em at home but I am too intimidated to play in a casino. I want to try it. What should I do?"

If you know the basic rules, there is no reason not to give it a whirl. The players will be patient, the dealers helpful, and you won't go broke. Here are some suggestions for a positive first experience.

When you enter the poker room, tell the person behind the desk that you are new to casino play. He will tell you what games they have, and answer any questions. He will give you a seat, or put you on a waiting list. Observe the action for a while before playing.

When you take your seat, let the dealer know that it's your first time. She will then prompt you when it's your turn, and tell you what your options are. Don't be shy about this - it's part of the dealer's job to assist new players. Don't forget to tip her $1 out of every pot that you win.

If the other players at the table know that it's your first time, they will be helpful also. It's true that they want your money - but they also want you to come back again. If they seem to be licking their chops, they probably are - but don't let that bother you. Every one of them was a novice once, too.

The speed of play will seem fast, and you will want extra time to look at your cards and think. When it's your turn to act, just say "Time." The action will stop for the extra minute or two that you need to figure out what to do.

Do not play no-limit. Start off in a low-limit game, either $2-$4 or $3-$6. If you play conservatively, $60 will be enough to give you plenty of playing time. Plan to play either for a set period of time, or until you win or lose a pre-set amount.

Like many activities that prove to be enjoyable, it's only scary the first time.
