While most of the
world's attention in the coming month will focus on the soccer World Cup in
South Africa, a world cup of a different kind is taking place in Las Vegas -
the 41st World Series of Poker.
The results of 14 of the
event's 57 scheduled tournaments had already been decided by Wednesday June 9,
as the clock continues to tick down to WSOP's flagship Main Event, which begins
on July 5.
In the biggest
tournament so far, Michael Mizrachi made history by not only winning more than
the $1.5 million first prize for the $50,000 Poker Player's Championship, but
also by beating a final table that included older brother and former WSOP gold
bracelet winner Robert Mizrachi.
This was only the third
time that siblings had met at the final table of a WSOP tournament. Previously,
Annie Duke and Howard Lederer finished sixth and ninth respectively at the 1995
Pot Limit Hold'em championship, while in 2002 Ross and Barney Boatman finished
seventh and ninth in the Pot-Limit Omaha event.
Meanwhile, DoylesRoom
pros have featured heavily at the WSOP event thus far, with Allen Kessler in
particular impressing, having cashed in three times including one runner-up
finish.
Four online poker players are competing at the WSOP for top spot on the Brunson 10 Become
a Legend Leaderboard. Each player earns points for every time they win cash at
a WSOP event, and the player with the most points at the end will join Doyle
Brunson's team.
