The Vancouver Canucks scored three times in the third period to earn
a 4-2 comeback win on the road over the Nashville Predators on Sunday
afternoon.
With the game tied 2-2, Predators J.P. Dumont and Denis Grebeshkov
collided in the neutral zone and Kyle Wellwood saw an opening and found
Jannik Hansen with a stretch pass.
"They seemed to fall on each other and there was a pileup," Wellwood
said. "It was a pretty easy pass. The first thing I noticed was the two
guys on the ice at that point — both of my wingers were looking for a
breakaway."
Hansen had a breakaway on Nashville's Pekka Rinne, who stopped the
initial shot but didn't see the rebound lying by his right foot, Hansen
had an easy tap-in for his seventh goal at 14:18.
"Wellwood made a nice cross-ice pass over their last guy, and I got
a great break from the blue-line," Hansen said. "I tried to put it
five-hole, but didn't quite succeed, but luckily I got the rebound."
It was the ninth time that the Canucks have rallied from a deficit
after two periods as they improved to 7-5-0 on their franchise-high
14-game road trip.
"We were down by a goal going into the third and, again, we found a way to get it done," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said.
Alex Edler, Mikael Samuelsson and Henrik Sedin, into an empty net, also scored for Vancouver.
Jason Arnott and Jordin Tootoo scored for the Predators, who have dropped back-to-back games after winning three straight.
Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo rebounded from one of his worst
outings of the season on Friday, when he gave up five goals in the
first period in a 6-3 loss to Chicago.
Luongo was much better against Nashville, making key saves at
critical moments in the second and third periods to give the Canucks a
chance to win. He stopped 33 of 35 shots.
Hornqvist robbed
His
best save of the night came off the stick of Patric Hornqvist, who
found himself all alone at the side of the net during a Nashville power
play in the final minute of the second. Luongo slid across the crease,
robbing Hornqvist with his right pad. That save kept the Canucks within
one goal, heading into the third.
In the dying minutes of regulation, Luongo stoned Jason Arnott with another cross-crease save, to preserve the victory.
The Canucks goalie seemed to improve as the game wore on.
In the first period, he appeared to be fighting the puck, having
difficulty controlling rebounds. While Arnott's first-period goal took
a few lucky bounces, Tootoo's marker in the second period was the
direct result of a fat rebound.
At the other end of the rink, Pekka Rinne allowed three goals on 27 shots.
The Predators lost for just the third time this season when leading after two periods.
"I thought we were pretty solid for the most part," Nashville coach
Barry Trotz said. "They're going to get a few chances because they are
a good team. We were in scramble mode after their second goal. With the
third goal, you have to play with more risk to get it back."
Predators defenceman Shea Weber missed Sunday's game with an upper-body injury sustained Friday night in Detroit.
