The potent Washington Capitals will go for their 14th consecutive
home victory on Monday night when they host the Dallas Stars, who've
allowed 17 goals in three games since NHL play resumed following the
Olympics.
The home streak is one shy of matching Boston's feat last year as
the best in the NHL in the past 35 years, and the Capitals have two
more games after the Stars in a homestand. The Capitals are 25-3-3 at
Verizon Center.
Superstar Alex Ovechkin is likely champing at the bit to get a
chance to play the porous Stars. He is in a season-long drought of six
games without a goal since before the Olympic break.
Ovechkin stil leads the NHL in points with 90, and at 42 goals is
just two behind Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby for the league lead.
He has played just three career games against Dallas, with a goal and
an assist.
José Théodore recorded his 29th career shutout as the Capitals blanked the New York Rangers 2-0 on Saturday.
Eric Fehr and new addition Eric Belanger scored the goals for
Washington (44-13-8). Fehr has a three-game points streak, while
Belanger scored his first since joining the Capital last week following
a trade deadline deal with Minnesota.
The Capitals have been so dominant of late that the victory against
the Rangers included a bit of disappointment, ending a streak of 23
games with at least three goals scored. Washington leads the NHL with
253 goals.
Dallas is six points back of a playoff spot, having been outscored 17-5 in the three games since the end of the Olympic break.
It was the least desirable start possible for a team that plays 16 times in March.
Game features power-play pros
Kari
Lehtonen, in his first start for Dallas since being acquired in a trade
with Atlanta, surrendered six goals on 34 shots in the team's 6-3 loss
to Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Mike Ribeiro and Brandon Segal each had a goal and an assist for Dallas (28-24-12).
Ribeiro has five goals in the last six games, while Segal has four
points in three games for the Stars since being picked up on the waiver
wire from Los Angeles.
Leading goal scorer Loui Eriksson also scored Saturday, and now has
four goals in the last seven games to put him at 25 for the season.
Monday's game will feature three players in the top 10 in power-play
scoring: Ovechkin, Washington defenceman Mike Green and Dallas forward
Brad Richards.
Richards leads the Stars with 69 points but is a minus-17. That
means he's a power-play specialist — among the top NHL point getters,
only Anze Kopitar of Los Angeles has gained a higher percentage of
points with the man advantage.
Dallas ranks just 26th on the penalty kill and will have to contend against the top power-play unit in the league.
